Getting started
Install
Follow the download and install guide to get Cue onto your Mac.
- Download Cue-mac.zip from the install guide and double-click it to unzip.
- Drag Cue into your Applications folder.
- Open Cue. macOS says it can’t verify the developer. Click Done.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to Cue. Confirm with your password if asked.
- macOS asks once more. Click Open, and enter your password if asked.
First run
- Choose Continue on the welcome screen and try the shortcut.
- On Talk instead of type, allow microphone and speech-recognition access, or skip and type instead.
- Make your account with your first name. Skip for now keeps tasks on this Mac only: no sync or Q answers. You can create an account later in Settings → Account.
- On Apple silicon Macs, choose Download or Not now for the optional 480 MB voice model. It only downloads with your consent. Its second listen runs on your Mac.
- Choose whether to turn on Open Cue when I log in (off by default) and the morning and due-tonight summaries. Read the privacy notice, then take the quick tour or skip it.
Capturing
Press Option–Space (⌥Space) in any app. Change the default in Settings → Hotkeys. Speak or type a task, event, or reminder, then press Return. Listening starts by default; click the mic to toggle it. Typing stops listening.
Try “physics pre-lab due at midnight” or “office hours tomorrow from 3 to 4”. Check the title, date, and time. New items normally save right away; review proposed edits or deletes and choose Do it or Never mind.
Offline captures can be added on this Mac and queued to sync later when you reconnect. Q needs a connection to answer questions. If you skipped creating an account, tasks stay local until you set up an account.
Asking Q
Ask in the same capture bar: “What do I have tomorrow?”, “when’s my next exam”, “what’s due this weekend”, or “am I free right now”. You need an account and an internet connection for Q’s answers.
Q can also plan your week. Review the proposed sessions before choosing Do it.
Today & planning
Today puts overdue, due-today, and urgent items first. Check an item off when done or click its title to edit. You can also open Today from the menu-bar icon.
Plan your week
Say or type “study 6 hours this week” or “gym 3 times this week”. Cue proposes sessions in free time from today through Sunday. On a Sunday, it plans through the following Sunday. The default window is 8 AM to 10 PM unless you give other hours.
Sessions are one hour by default and avoid your events. “N times” means at most one session a day. Choose Do it to add the plan or Never mind to dismiss it.
At-risk tasks
An At risk badge means a task needs more time than is free before its deadline within your working hours. Set those hours in Settings → General. Hover over the badge for the reason.
Calendars
Open Settings → Integrations to connect your sources.
Google Calendar
Choose Connect and finish signing in in your browser. Use Sync now to refresh. If Cue can read but cannot edit your calendar, choose Connect again and allow editing. Until then, new events are “Saved in Cue only”.
Apple Calendar
Choose Connect, then Allow Full Access. If you denied access, use Open System Settings and enable Cue under Privacy & Security → Calendars.
Calendar events show a calendar icon instead of a checkbox. Editing or deleting one in Cue changes it in the Calendar app. Disconnect stops showing them. While connected and signed in, Cue copies event details to its server so Q can use them; disconnecting removes those server copies.
Canvas calendar feed
In Canvas, open Calendar → Calendar Feed and copy the link. In Cue, choose Canvas → Connect and paste it to import assignments and due dates. Keep your feed link private.
Syllabus & class schedule
Import a course syllabus to add deadlines and exams. Review the proposed items before confirming, and check their titles, dates, and times.
For weekly classes, open Settings → General → Class schedule → Set Up… (or Edit…). Paste your timetable or enter classes row by row, then set your semester dates. Choose Add Classes or Save Changes. Each class becomes an event every week it meets, under its course.
Focus & wrap-up
Start a focus session from a task and end it when you are done.
Say or type “wrap up my day” to review unfinished tasks one at a time. The summary offers Undo wrap-up to reverse the changes.
Morning and due-tonight summaries recap what is coming and what is left. Turn them on or off in Settings.
Notifications
If notifications are turned off for Cue, Settings → Notifications says so. Summaries and deadline reminders cannot reach you until you enable them. Click Open System Settings to turn them back on.
Accounts
Create your account
Enter your first name during onboarding, or use Settings → Account → Create your account later. An account enables sync and Q’s answers.
Use Cue on another Mac
- On the Mac with your account, choose Settings → Account → Use Cue on another Mac.
- On the new Mac, choose Already have an account? Enter a pairing code, type the code, and choose Pair.
The code lasts 10 minutes and works only once. Generate a new code on the original Mac if it expires or has already been used.
Sign out or delete your account
Choose Settings → Account → Sign out to sign out. To permanently erase your account and server data and remove this Mac’s copy, choose Delete Account… in the same settings. Deletion cannot be undone. Use Export My Data… first if you want a copy.
Updating
Choose Cue → Check for Updates…. The updater opens the download page; it does not install automatically. Download the new zip and replace the app using the install guide. Versions are listed on the releases page.
You may need to grant microphone and notification permissions again after an update.
Troubleshooting
Microphone permission
Enable Cue in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and Speech Recognition. You can type captures while microphone access is off.
Notifications are off
Open Settings → Notifications → Open System Settings to enable notifications for Cue.
Google needs reconnecting / “Saved in Cue only”
In Settings → Integrations → Google Calendar, choose Connect again and allow calendar editing. “Saved in Cue only” means the new event has not been written to Google Calendar.
Can’t sign in
Check your connection and the message in Settings → Account. For an expired or used pairing code, make a new one on your other Mac. If an invite code is rejected, ask for a new invite code. If you still cannot sign in, contact support with the error message.
Privacy in short
Your tasks sync to Cue’s server when you use an account. Some requests go to OpenAI to understand them. Connected Apple Calendar events are also copied to Cue’s server while signed in, so Q can answer schedule questions.
You can export or delete your data in Settings → Account. Read the full privacy notice for details.
Contact
Choose Help → Contact Support in the app or report a problem or ask a question. You can also open the GitHub issue chooser directly.
Use Settings → About → Copy Diagnostics to include your Cue and macOS versions, without your tasks or sign-in details. For capture mistakes, Settings → Accuracy → Export misses… saves a file you can attach.
